Mulch Delivery in Washington: Benefits, Types, and How Much You Need

Bulk mulch is one of the cheapest and most effective things you can do for any garden bed in Washington State. A 2 to 3 inch layer of quality mulch suppresses weeds, holds soil moisture through our dry summers, insulates roots from temperature swings, and slowly improves soil structure as it breaks down.

This guide covers the types of mulch we deliver, how much you actually need, what mulch delivery costs in Western Washington, and the right way to apply it.

Why mulch matters in the PNW. Our winters are wet and our summers are increasingly dry. Bare soil bakes, cracks, and loses moisture to evaporation. A proper mulch layer can cut summer irrigation needs by 30 to 50 percent and dramatically reduces weed pressure, especially in newly planted beds.

Types of mulch we deliver. Medium dark bark, fine dark bark, arborist wood chips, playground chips, and composted hemlock and fir mulch. Each has different uses. Fine dark bark is the most popular for ornamental beds, arborist chips are best around trees, and playground chips meet safety specs for play areas.

How much mulch do you need? Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at a 3 inch depth, or 160 square feet at 2 inches. For a quick estimate, multiply the length by width of your bed in feet, then divide by 100 for a 3 inch layer. Most residential mulch jobs in Western Washington are between 3 and 12 yards.

Mulch delivery cost in Washington. Pricing varies by mulch type, distance from our yard, and order size. Bulk delivery typically runs $45 to $90 per cubic yard delivered, with discounts on larger loads. Spreading service is available as an add-on.

How to apply mulch correctly. Pull old mulch and weeds first, then lay 2 to 3 inches of fresh mulch evenly across the bed. Keep mulch 3 to 4 inches away from tree trunks and the base of shrubs. Mulch volcanoes piled against trunks cause rot and pest problems.
